There are two types of microporous filtration operations: non-flow and cross-flow. The former is used in dilute (solid content) feed liquids and smaller scale applications. The filter membrane is made into a filter element, which is mostly disposable. Cross-flow operation, also known as tangential flow operation, is not very sensitive to changes in the size and concentration of suspended particles, and is suitable for larger-scale applications. The membrane components of this type of operation need to be regularly cleaned and regenerated.
